Unstoppable by J Disco
My Thing Re-Edit
Loves Entry
Available at:
New label TopShelf appears to be coming of the same Los Angeles scene that spawned the infamous Freestyle re-edits and DJs like Hotlips & Hawkeye, J-Disco being the latest addition to the list of Californian disco heads. Apparently already aired out by the aforementioned lot as well as Harvey, Rub N Tug, DJ Garth and the Idjut Boys - "My Way" is a spiffing riff on that Afrika Bambaataa "Death Mix" / Bronx Dogs "Tribute To Jazzy Jay" break, teasing the drums and eventually surrendering to elements of the original source. Turning over to "Loves Entry", the vibe becomes trippier, druggier and generally more spaced-out as J-Disco spins an epic instrumental with an awesome electric guitar solo out of a secret Balearic gem.
Available at:
Cow, that secretive West Coast label responsible for the Haircut 100 12", come up with the goods again on this frighteningly good record from J-Disco (of "Unstoppable" fame on TopShelf) and Hawkeye (Headinghome). J-Disco's oddly titled "Something Slow" most certainly is not downbeat*, being a frenetic disco ensemble piece with grand strings, horn section and ultra funky playing. Hawkeye's "Dirty Fantasy" is a take on Free Life's 1979 single "Dance Fantasy", giving the EW&F offshoot a rough yet erotically-charged makeover.

Discorgasm by Rotarysoldier
Erotic
Country
Available at:
The last Top Shelf item we had was the J Disco 12" that was Unstoppable both by title and nature, this one will be no different for sure. Rotary Soldier edits up two more dancefloor killers. "Erotic" is a hi energy disco / funk jam, with tons of funky layered guitar and ace vocals about girls of all shapes and sizes. On side-B "Country" takes the title for me, a weird leftfield disco track, kinda like you'd expect from Gary Davis, whispered female vocals and space funk backing band.

On The Rocks by Phoreski
A1. Elotric
B1. Bared Low
A2. Monk Funk
On Side A we start off with ‘Elotric’, an eighties-electro-discofied groove with weird effected bits of vocals, a nice synth bassline, guitar and upfront drums all mixed together to make this a nice little uptempo jam. Side A continues with ‘Monk Fonk’, a sludgy, heavy, slo-mo disco number. A fat analogue bassline and weirdo wobbly synths make this the more leftfield track on the EP. Rounding out this 12” is ‘Bared Low’ on the B-side. A midtempo, cosmic groove containing a fat bassline, piano bits, smooth synth and guitar riffs that will melt any dance floor!
Initial Pressing of 300.
